Product overview

What Ammonia is used for

Ammonia is a pungent, colourless gas at room temperature, supplied commercially either as a pressurised or refrigerated liquid (anhydrous ammonia) or dissolved in water (aqueous ammonia). It is produced industrially by the catalytic Haber-Bosch synthesis of nitrogen and hydrogen.

Ammonia's single largest use is as the nitrogen feedstock for urea and ammonium nitrate fertilizers, which together account for the majority of global ammonia consumption and underpin world food production. It is also the essential raw material for nitric acid production via catalytic oxidation, and is widely used as a refrigerant in industrial and commercial refrigeration systems, and in diluted form as a cleaning agent and pH-neutralising reagent.

Where it sits in the fertilizer value chain

  • Nitrogen & Hydrogen the feedstocks ammonia is synthesised from via the Haber-Bosch process.
  • Ammonia (this product) the core nitrogen intermediate supplied to fertilizer and chemical plants.
  • Urea, Ammonium Nitrate, Nitric Acid major derivatives produced from ammonia. See the Urea page or the Nitric Acid page.

How we supply Ammonia

Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. Purity, moisture content and oil content are critical to downstream fertilizer and chemical quality — that shapes how we manage this line.

We place your order with whichever qualified producer best matches your required grade, your price point and your delivery window, and confirm your jurisdiction's import requirements before booking.

We keep a second qualified source on this line, so a single-plant disruption never becomes your production problem.

  • Purity and moisture content confirmed before we quote. Consistency matters to downstream fertilizer and chemical quality.
  • UN 1005 documentation managed end to end. Classification, labelling and carrier compliance confirmed before booking.
  • Scheduled call-off scheduling. We hold contracted tonnage and release it against your consumption calendar.
  • Batch traceability to the producing plant. Full chain of custody documentation on request.
  • Export machinery handled in-house. Classification, approved packing, labelling, freight booking and customs paperwork are ours to manage.
  • Anhydrous and aqueous grades both sourced. Matched precisely to your process.

Safety, storage & handling

Toxic and corrosive — handle accordingly

Ammonia causes severe irritation and burns to skin, eyes and the respiratory tract, and is acutely toxic at elevated concentrations. The summary below is orientation only — the safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch is the authoritative document.

GHS Signal word: Danger

Classified hazards

  • H221Flammable gas (in defined concentration range).
  • H280Contains gas under pressure; may explode if heated.
  • H314Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.
  • H331Toxic if inhaled.
  • H400Very toxic to aquatic life.

Handle only with trained personnel and proper PPE. Always read the SDS issued with your specific batch and store accordingly.

Storage

Store anhydrous ammonia in approved pressurised vessels, away from heat sources and incompatible materials (halogens, acids, oxidisers), with appropriate secondary containment for aqueous grades.

Handling

Use full PPE (chemical-resistant gloves, goggles/face shield, respiratory protection appropriate to concentration) and work with trained personnel only. Ensure adequate ventilation and emergency shower/eyewash access at all transfer points.

Transport

Shipped as UN 1005 (Ammonia, anhydrous), Packing Group II, under pressure; aqueous solutions carry separate UN numbers by concentration. We confirm and document exact classification for your specific shipment and destination.

Quality assurance

Every batch, documented

We verify documentation before dispatch so there are no surprises at your incoming-goods bench.

Specification agreed

Assay, moisture and oil content confirmed against your process requirement before order placement.

Producer batch testing

The producing plant tests each batch against the agreed specification before release.

Documentation review

COA, SDS and transport paperwork checked by our desk before the shipment is booked.

Traceable dispatch

Each shipment is traceable to its producing batch, with full chain-of-custody records on request.

Production background

How ammonia is made

Ammonia is produced industrially by the Haber-Bosch process, the catalytic reaction of nitrogen (from air) and hydrogen (typically from steam-reformed natural gas) over an iron catalyst at high pressure and temperature. This is one of the most consequential industrial chemical processes in history, underpinning modern nitrogen-fertilizer production.

We do not publish operating process parameters here; this is background only. Full technical documentation accompanies every shipment, and any process-specific detail you need is best confirmed directly with our technical desk.

How is ammonia related to urea and fertilizers?
Ammonia is the nitrogen source reacted with carbon dioxide to produce urea, and with nitric acid to produce ammonium nitrate. These two reactions account for the majority of global ammonia consumption, making it the foundation of the nitrogen-fertilizer industry.
Is Ammonia hazardous?
Yes. Anhydrous ammonia is toxic and corrosive on contact with skin, eyes and the respiratory tract, and is classified as a flammable gas under certain conditions. It ships as UN 1005. Full regulatory documentation accompanies every consignment.
What grade do you supply?
Anhydrous liquefied ammonia and aqueous ammonia solutions (aqua ammonia) to the purity your fertilizer, chemical or refrigeration process requires. Tell us your end use and we will quote against the correct specification.
What packing do you offer?
Pressurised cylinders and ISO tanks for anhydrous ammonia, and drums or IBC totes for aqueous ammonia solutions, sized to your order volumes.
Do you manufacture this yourself?
No - Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. We place your order with whichever qualified producer fits your specification and timeline, and hold a second source in reserve.
