Product overview

What Aniline is used for

Aniline is a colourless to pale yellow, oily liquid that darkens on exposure to air and light. As the simplest member of the aromatic amine family — a benzene ring carrying a single amine group — it is one of the highest-volume organic chemicals produced worldwide.

Its single largest use is as the feedstock for methylenedianiline (MDA), which is in turn converted into methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) — one of the two principal diisocyanates behind most polyurethane foam, elastomer and coatings production. Aniline is also the starting material for rubber-processing chemicals such as diphenylamine and phenylenediamine antioxidants, for dyes and pigments (notably indigo), for certain herbicides, and for pharmaceutical intermediates including paracetamol precursors.

Where it sits in the aromatic amine family

  • Aniline (this product) the simplest aromatic amine — the entry point to MDA/MDI and rubber-chemical chemistry.
  • Diphenylamine made from aniline — an antioxidant and antiozonant for rubber and lubricants. See that page.
  • 4,4'-Methylenedianiline (MDA) made from aniline — the direct precursor to MDI. See that page.

Appearance and handling character

Aniline is toxic if swallowed, in contact with skin, or if inhaled, causes skin and serious eye irritation, may cause an allergic skin reaction, is suspected of causing genetic defects and cancer, causes damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure, and is very toxic to aquatic life. Full hazard details are in the Safety section below.

How we supply Aniline

Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. Aniline's role as a high-volume chemical intermediate means colour stability and freedom from oxidation matter — that shapes how we manage this line.

We place your order with whichever qualified producer best matches your required grade, your price point and your delivery window.

We keep a second qualified source on this line, so a single-plant disruption never becomes your production problem.

  • Colour and assay confirmed before we quote. Consistency matters to downstream MDA/MDI feedstock quality.
  • UN 1547 logistics managed end to end. Classification, labelling and carrier compliance confirmed before booking.
  • Toxicity and aquatic-hazard documentation filed correctly. Every shipment carries the correct hazard declarations.
  • Scheduled call-off scheduling. We hold contracted tonnage and release it against your consumption calendar.
  • Batch traceability to the producing plant. Full chain of custody documentation on request.
  • Export machinery handled in-house. Classification, approved packing, labelling, freight booking and customs paperwork are ours to manage.

Safety, storage & handling

Toxic, and suspected of causing cancer

Aniline's combination of acute toxicity and suspected carcinogenicity makes PPE, exposure monitoring and ventilation the central handling concerns. The summary below is orientation only — the safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch is the authoritative document.

GHS Signal word: Danger

Classified hazards

  • H301Toxic if swallowed.
  • H311Toxic in contact with skin.
  • H317May cause an allergic skin reaction.
  • H318Causes serious eye damage.
  • H331Toxic if inhaled.
  • H341Suspected of causing genetic defects.
  • H351Suspected of causing cancer.
  • H372Causes damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure.
  • H400Very toxic to aquatic life.

Always read the SDS issued with your specific batch. Handle with chemical-resistant gloves, goggles, and adequate ventilation; avoid any skin contact.

Storage

Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from strong oxidisers and acids, and protected from light to limit discolouration.

Handling

Use with local exhaust ventilation. Minimise skin, eye and respiratory exposure with appropriate PPE given its toxicity by all exposure routes. Contain any spill to prevent waterway contamination.

Transport

Shipped as UN 1547 in accordance with its toxic classification. We confirm and document packing group and exact classification for your specific shipment and destination.

Quality assurance

Every batch, documented

We verify documentation before dispatch so there are no surprises at your incoming-goods bench.

Specification agreed

Assay and colour confirmed against your downstream requirement before order placement.

Producer batch testing

The producing plant tests each batch against the agreed specification before release.

Documentation review

COA, SDS and transport paperwork checked by our desk before the shipment is booked.

Traceable dispatch

Each shipment is traceable to its producing batch, with full chain-of-custody records on request.

Production background

How aniline is made

Aniline is produced industrially at large scale, predominantly by the catalytic hydrogenation of nitrobenzene, nitrobenzene itself being made from benzene and nitric acid through well-established large-scale petrochemical routes, followed by purification and distillation to the required assay.

We do not publish operating process parameters here; this is background only. Full technical and safety documentation accompanies every shipment, and any process-specific detail you need is best confirmed directly with our technical desk.

Frequently asked

Aniline, answered

What is aniline used for?
Aniline is the primary feedstock for methylenedianiline (MDA) and the methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) that underlies most polyurethane foam. It is also used to make rubber-processing antioxidants and accelerators (such as diphenylamine and phenylenediamines), dyes and pigments, herbicides, and pharmaceutical intermediates.
Is aniline the starting point for polyurethane?
Yes, indirectly. Aniline is reacted to form methylenedianiline (MDA), which is then converted to methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) — one of the two main diisocyanates used to make polyurethane foams, elastomers and coatings.
Is aniline hazardous?
Yes. It is toxic if swallowed, in contact with skin, or if inhaled, causes skin and serious eye irritation, may cause an allergic skin reaction, is suspected of causing genetic defects and cancer, causes damage to organs through prolonged exposure, and is very toxic to aquatic life. It ships as UN 1547. Full GHS documentation accompanies every consignment.
What grade do you supply?
Technical grade, typically 99.5%+ assay suitable for MDA/MDI and downstream chemical-intermediate applications. Tell us your end use and we will quote against the correct specification.
What packing do you offer?
Drums and bulk/ISO tank shipment, sized to chemical-intermediate plant order volumes.
Do you manufacture this yourself?
No - Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. We place your order with whichever qualified producer fits your specification and timeline, and hold a second source in reserve.
