What Oleylamine is used for
Oleylamine is a pale yellow to amber liquid with a faint amine odour, derived structurally from oleic acid. Unlike its saturated C18 relative octadecylamine, oleylamine carries a single cis double bond partway along its chain, which kinks the molecule and keeps it liquid at room temperature — a key practical difference between the two.
That combination of a long hydrophobic tail, a reactive amine head group, and room-temperature liquidity has made oleylamine a go-to capping and surface ligand in nanoparticle synthesis, where it both reduces metal precursors and stabilises the resulting nanocrystal surface. Industrially, it is also used as a flotation-collector intermediate in mineral processing, in asphalt and bitumen anti-stripping additives, and as a raw material for surfactants and corrosion inhibitors.
Where it sits in the fatty amine family
- Dodecylamine (Laurylamine) C12 saturated chain — shorter, used in corrosion and flotation chemistry. See that page.
- Octadecylamine (Stearylamine) C18 saturated chain — solid, boiler-water filming amine. See that page.
- Oleylamine (this product) C18 unsaturated chain — liquid, nanoparticle and specialty-synthesis chemistry.

How we supply Oleylamine
Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. Oleylamine's unsaturated chain is prone to oxidation and colour drift over time — that shapes how we manage this line.
We place your order with whichever qualified producer best matches your required grade — technical or research — your price point and your delivery window.
We keep a second qualified source on this line, so a single-plant disruption never becomes your production problem.
- Colour and purity confirmed before we quote. Oxidation drift is checked against your required grade.
- Nitrogen-blanketing options on request. Helps protect the unsaturated chain during storage and transit.
- Research-pack availability. Smaller, higher-purity packs sourced for nanomaterials and lab customers.
- Scheduled call-off scheduling. We hold contracted tonnage and release it against your consumption calendar.
- Batch traceability to the producing plant. Full chain of custody documentation on request.
- Export machinery handled in-house. Classification, approved packing, labelling, freight booking and customs paperwork are ours to manage.

Handle as a corrosive liquid amine
Published GHS classification data for oleylamine is limited across public safety sources. Where full GHS hazard statements are not available, we reference the NFPA 704 fire-diamond rating as orientation. The summary below is guidance only — the safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch is the authoritative document.
NFPA 704 hazard rating
Always read the SDS issued with your specific batch. A Health rating of 3 indicates material that can cause serious or permanent injury on short exposure. Handle with chemical-resistant gloves, splash goggles and adequate ventilation.
Storage
Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from strong oxidisers. The unsaturated chain is prone to slow air oxidation and colour darkening; nitrogen-blanketed storage helps preserve quality over extended periods.
Handling
Use with local exhaust ventilation. Minimise skin and eye contact with appropriate gloves, splash goggles and protective clothing. Contain any spill to prevent waterway contamination.
Transport
Classified according to its corrosive-liquid-amine profile for transport. We confirm and document packing group and exact classification for your specific shipment and destination.
Every batch, documented
We verify documentation before dispatch so there are no surprises at your incoming-goods bench.
Specification agreed
Assay, colour and iodine value confirmed against your process requirement before order placement.
Producer batch testing
The producing plant tests each batch against the agreed specification before release.
Documentation review
COA, SDS and transport paperwork checked by our desk before the shipment is booked.
Traceable dispatch
Each shipment is traceable to its producing batch, with full chain-of-custody records on request.
How oleylamine is made
Oleylamine is produced industrially from oleic acid or oleyl alcohol derived from vegetable-oil feedstocks, via catalytic amination/reduction routes common to the fatty-amine industry, retaining the characteristic cis double bond of the oleyl chain, followed by purification to the required assay and colour.
We do not publish operating process parameters here; this is background only. Full technical and safety documentation accompanies every shipment, and any process-specific detail you need is best confirmed directly with our technical desk.
