Para Nitrobenzamide
Para nitrobenzamide exists commercially for one reason: it carries a nitrogen that stays put and a nitro group that comes off. Reduce the nitro, keep the amide, and you have 4-aminobenzamide — a building block that runs through a long list of pharmaceutical and agrochemical structures.
Chelora Chemicals supplies para nitrobenzamide to pharmaceutical, agrochemical and fine-chemical producers worldwide, with a batch COA and GHS safety data sheet on every consignment.

What Para Nitrobenzamide is used for
Para nitrobenzamide is an off-white to pale yellow crystalline powder — a benzene ring carrying a primary amide at one position and a nitro group directly opposite. That para arrangement matters: it holds the two functional groups electronically apart, so the nitro can be reduced cleanly without touching the amide.
Its dominant commercial use is as a pharmaceutical and agrochemical intermediate. Catalytic hydrogenation or chemical reduction converts it to 4-aminobenzamide, which then goes on to benzamide-containing actives and heterocyclic systems. The intact nitro compound is also used directly as a building block where the electron-poor ring is the point.
Where it sits among para-substituted nitro aromatics
- Para nitrobenzamide (this product) primary amide; the nitrogen stays on the molecule through reduction.
- Para nitrobenzoic acid the carboxylic acid at the same position, and the usual upstream material. See that page.
- Para nitrobenzonitrile the nitrile; hydrolyses to this amide, or reduces to the benzylamine.
- Para nitrophenol the phenolic analogue, serving a quite different set of downstream routes. See that page.

Appearance and handling character
The material ships as a free-flowing crystalline powder, sparingly soluble in cold water, more soluble in hot ethanol, acetone and DMF. It is not classified as acutely toxic at the levels commonly published, but it is an irritant to skin, eyes and the respiratory tract, and like all nitro-aromatics it should be kept well away from strong reducing and oxidising conditions outside the reaction vessel.

How we supply Para Nitrobenzamide
Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. On a pharmaceutical intermediate, owning no plant means we are never selling you whatever a captive unit happens to be running — we route your order to the producer whose impurity profile actually matches what your filing can carry.
We place your order with whichever qualified producer best matches your assay, your impurity specification, your price point and your delivery window.
We keep a second qualified source on this line. When a plant goes down for maintenance, your order switches source rather than stalling.
- Assay and impurity profile confirmed before we quote. 99% min with a declared single-max impurity is the commercial standard — we state both on the COA.
- We ask what it feeds before we quote. A regulated starting material and a research quantity need different documentation, and the time to settle that is at enquiry.
- Batch COA shared before dispatch. You approve assay and melting range against your own spec while the material is still in our warehouse.
- Catalyst-poison figures available. If the next step is a hydrogenation, we will get you sulphur and heavy-metal data rather than a bare assay.
- Pre-shipment samples for qualification. New account or new source, your laboratory runs a trial before the full quantity ever moves.
- Export machinery handled in-house. Classification, packing, labelling, freight booking and customs paperwork are ours to manage.
Packed the way your plant receives it
Pack format drives your landed cost and your handling effort. Tell us how the material will be charged at your end and we will quote the format that suits your operation.
Fibre / HDPE drums
Drums with an inner LDPE liner — the standard commercial format and the easiest to handle into a charging port.
Lined steel drums
Heavier-duty drums for long sea legs and humid destinations, where liner integrity over months in transit is the governing concern.
Jumbo bags (FIBC)
Lined, discharge-spout FIBCs for high-volume consumers with bulk-bag handling already installed.
Trial / sample quantities
Small packs dispatched so your R&D team can qualify the grade before committing to larger volumes.
Incoterms to suit you
Quoted on the Incoterm your purchasing team works to, with export documentation filed before the booking is made.
Campaign despatch
We hold contracted tonnage and release it against your production calendar instead of landing it all at once.
An irritant powder, not an acute toxin
Para nitrobenzamide sits at the mild end of the nitro-aromatic family. It is classified for irritation rather than acute toxicity, which makes dust control and ordinary good practice the whole of the handling story. The summary below is orientation only — the safety data sheet supplied with your consignment is the authoritative document.
Classified hazards
H302Harmful if swallowed.H315Causes skin irritation.H319Causes serious eye irritation.H335May cause respiratory irritation.
Hazard statements reflect classifications commonly published for CAS 619-80-7. Suppliers do differ on this product, and some SDS carry additional precautionary statements. Always read the SDS issued with your specific batch rather than assuming the classification above applies to the material in your drum.
Spill & emergency orientation
Plan your response before the pallet arrives. Sections 4, 5 and 6 of the SDS are the authoritative instructions and should be posted at the point of use.
- Avoid raising dust. Collect spilled powder with a vacuum or damp method rather than dry sweeping, which turns a floor spill into an airborne irritant.
- Flush eyes thoroughly and promptly. Eye irritation is the most likely real-world incident on this material — have an eyewash station at the charging point.
- Wash skin with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing and launder it before re-use.
- Keep it out of the drain. Collect the material and dispose of it as chemical waste in line with local rules.
- Keep away from strong oxidisers. Nitro-aromatics should not be stored next to oxidising agents even when the compound itself is stable.
Storage
- Cool, dry, well-ventilated store. Away from direct sunlight and heat sources; there is no special temperature requirement beyond ordinary warehouse conditions.
- Keep containers tightly closed. The powder is not strongly hygroscopic, but moisture pick-up will show up in your Karl Fischer result and on your charge weight.
- Segregate from strong oxidising agents and strong bases. Standard practice for a nitro-aromatic amide.
- Keep the liner sealed between charges. Partial drums left open are the usual source of off-spec moisture results.
- Shelf life typically 24–36 months. In sealed original packing. Re-assay before use after extended storage.
Handling & PPE
- Control dust at the source. Local exhaust ventilation at charging and sampling points does most of the work here.
- Gloves, safety glasses and a dust mask. Chemical-resistant gloves and sealed goggles where the operation can generate airborne powder.
- Normal hygiene practice. No eating or drinking in the handling area; wash hands before breaks.
- Sample under extraction. Drum sampling is where most exposure happens on a powder like this.
- Dispose of as chemical waste. Do not discharge washings to an uncontrolled drain.
Transport
Para nitrobenzamide is generally shipped as non-regulated general cargo, but transport classification is mode and destination specific. We confirm the classification for each consignment and issue the declaration where one is required — ask us for the current shipping paperwork when you plan the shipment.
What travels with every consignment
A chemical shipment is only as good as the file that travels with it. Verifying what the source plant sends is precisely the work you are buying from a supplier.
Certificate of Analysis
Batch-specific assay, melting range, moisture, residue on ignition and impurity profile — checked against your purchase specification before release.
GHS Safety Data Sheet
Full 16-section SDS in GHS format covering hazards, exposure controls, handling, storage, spill response, toxicology and disposal, issued in the language your destination requires.
Analytical method & chromatogram
HPLC method and the batch chromatogram supplied on request, so your QC can reproduce the assay rather than take it on trust.
Certificate of Origin
Chamber-attested where required, plus preferential-origin forms where a trade agreement gives your import duty relief.
Third-party inspection
SGS, Intertek or Bureau Veritas sampling and inspection arranged on request before loading, giving you independent verification of what actually ships.
Retained & pre-shipment samples
Pre-shipment samples carry the same COA as the commercial lot, so what your laboratory qualifies is exactly what arrives.
One amide, one nitro group, para
The whole commercial logic of this molecule is that the two groups can be addressed separately. The routes below are the general industrial pattern, not a process disclosure.
Oxidise para-nitrotoluene
The methyl group of para-nitrotoluene is oxidised to the carboxylic acid, giving para nitrobenzoic acid.
Activate the acid
The acid is converted to a more reactive derivative — typically the acid chloride or an ester — ready for amidation.
Amidate with ammonia
Treatment with ammonia gives the primary amide, which crystallises out and is filtered and washed.
Recrystallise and dry
Recrystallisation lifts assay and tightens the melting range; controlled drying brings moisture into specification.
Why the impurity profile matters more than the headline assay
On an intermediate heading into a regulated route, two batches at the same assay can behave very differently:
- Residual starting acid carries through. Unreacted para nitrobenzoic acid is the commonest impurity and it survives the reduction step into your next intermediate.
- Isomeric nitro content is the one to watch. Ortho and meta isomers from the upstream nitration reduce just as readily and give isomeric amines you then have to purge.
- Catalyst poisons decide your hydrogenation. Sulphur and certain metals at ppm level will cost you far more in catalyst than the material saved on a cheaper grade.
- Moisture changes your charge weight. A 1% moisture swing is a 1% stoichiometry error before the reaction has even started.
That is why we quote against your written impurity limits rather than a generic "technical grade", and why the batch COA is shared for approval before dispatch rather than sent with the invoice.

What actually moves the price of this product
Knowing what drives the quote helps you time a purchase and read whether an offer is realistic.
Nitrotoluene and ammonia feedstock
The route runs from para-nitrotoluene through the acid, so toluene nitration economics and ammonia pricing both feed through.
- Toluene tracks the aromatics market
- Ammonia follows the natural-gas cycle
- We flag feedstock-driven moves in the quote
Specification tightness
A 99% technical grade and a low-isomer, low-metals pharma grade are different products from the same plant, at different prices.
- Tell us the real limits, not a wish list
- We will say when a cheaper grade will do
- Over-specification is the commonest cost leak
Freight and packaging
Non-DG status keeps freight simpler than most of this family, so pack format and container utilisation matter proportionally more.
- Compare on landed cost, not ex-works
- Drum vs FIBC changes the per-kilo freight
- We quote FOB, CIF, CFR or DDP as you prefer
Campaign scheduling
This is made in campaigns rather than continuously, so the question is often not price but when the next run is scheduled.
- Ask us where the campaign calendar sits
- Contracted call-off smooths the exposure
- We hold a second qualified source
Source availability
A plant turnaround, environmental inspection or feedstock disruption can take capacity offline at short notice.
- We hold a second qualified source on this line
- Qualify the alternate before you need it
- Ask us about dual-source contracts
Downstream API demand
Volumes track the actives this feeds. A single large product launch or withdrawal visibly moves demand on an intermediate this specialised.
- Ask us what downstream demand is doing
- Long-term contracts lock in supply
- Qualify a second source early
| If your end use is… | Specify |
|---|---|
| Regulated API starting material | Full impurity profile, residual solvents, metals |
| Hydrogenation to 4-aminobenzamide | Low sulphur and metals, catalyst-poison data |
| Agrochemical intermediate | Standard 99% commercial grade |
| Laboratory / reference use | Small pack, full COA and chromatogram |
Not sure which column you are in? Describe what you make from it and our technical desk will recommend the grade — including telling you when a cheaper specification would do the job just as well.
Support that goes beyond shipping the drum
What our technical desk will do
- Confirm assay and impurity limits before anything else. On an intermediate feeding a regulated route, the impurity profile decides usability and we settle it in the first reply.
- Ask what the next step is. A hydrogenation needs catalyst-poison data that a simple condensation does not — we would rather ask than guess.
- Get you the analytical package. Method, chromatogram and retained sample, so your QC can verify rather than accept.
- Review your specification before it goes into a contract. So you are not locked into a purity no plant can consistently hit.
Regulatory & compliance notes
- Regulated starting material status is yours to declare. If this is filed as an RSM, tell us — the documentation package and the change-control expectations are different.
- Import controls vary by destination. We check destination rules before quoting, not after you have raised the PO.
- Chemical inventory listings differ between regions. We will supply the identity data you need for that filing.
- Effluent and waste rules matter. Check your discharge consent against the material before introducing it to site.
None of the above is legal advice — your own regulatory affairs team owns the final compliance position for your import and your workplace. What we commit to is accurate product identity data, an honest statement of the hazard classification and complete documentation to work from.
