Product overview

What Ethylenediamine is used for

Ethylenediamine is a colourless liquid with an ammoniacal odour, the simplest member of the ethyleneamine family — a two-carbon chain carrying an amine group at each end. That simplicity is exactly what makes it so versatile: it is the entry point into a vast family of nitrogen-containing chemistries.

Industrially, EDA is the precursor to EDTA and other chelating agents, an epoxy resin curing agent, a building block for polyurethane fibres and PAMAM dendrimers, and the starting material for fungicides including mancozeb, maneb, zineb and metiram. In pharmaceutical chemistry it is an ingredient and excipient, notably in the bronchodilator aminophylline, and a precursor to early antihistamines. It also serves as a solvent, corrosion inhibitor, and component in photographic chemicals, adhesives, dyes and coordination-chemistry ligands.

The ethyleneamine family

  • Ethylenediamine (this product) two carbons, two amines — the simplest member.
  • Diethylenetriamine (DETA) three amine groups, higher viscosity and reactivity. See that page.
  • Triethylenetetramine (TETA) four amine groups, a stronger epoxy hardener. See that page.

Appearance and handling character

Ethylenediamine is flammable and corrosive — harmful if swallowed or in contact with skin, causes severe skin burns and eye damage, may cause an allergic skin reaction, and is harmful to aquatic life — a profile typical of the smaller ethyleneamines.

How we supply Ethylenediamine

Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. EDA's high-volume use across chelating-agent and epoxy chemistry means consistent assay and reliable delivery matter as much as price — that shapes how we manage this line.

We place your order with whichever qualified producer best matches your required grade, your price point and your delivery window.

We keep a second qualified source on this line, so a single-plant disruption never becomes your production problem.

  • Assay confirmed before we quote. Purity matters to downstream chelating-agent and epoxy synthesis.
  • UN 1604 logistics managed end to end. Classification, labelling and carrier compliance confirmed before booking.
  • Aquatic-hazard documentation filed correctly. Every shipment carries the correct hazard declarations.
  • Scheduled call-off scheduling. We hold contracted tonnage and release it against your consumption calendar.
  • Batch traceability to the producing plant. Full chain of custody documentation on request.
  • Export machinery handled in-house. Classification, approved packing, labelling, freight booking and customs paperwork are ours to manage.

Safety, storage & handling

Flammable, corrosive, and sensitising

Ethylenediamine's combination of flammability, corrosivity and sensitisation potential makes PPE and ventilation the central handling concerns. The summary below is orientation only — the safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch is the authoritative document.

GHS Signal word: Danger

Classified hazards

  • H226Flammable liquid and vapour.
  • H302Harmful if swallowed.
  • H311Toxic in contact with skin.
  • H314Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.
  • H317May cause an allergic skin reaction.
  • H332Harmful if inhaled.
  • H334May cause allergy or asthma symptoms if inhaled.
  • H412Harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.

Always read the SDS issued with your specific batch. Eliminate ignition sources; handle with chemical-resistant gloves, splash goggles and adequate ventilation.

Storage

Store in tightly closed containers away from heat, sparks and open flame, in a well-ventilated area rated for flammable liquids.

Handling

Use with local exhaust ventilation and bond/ground equipment during transfer to control static discharge. Minimise inhalation and skin contact to prevent sensitisation.

Transport

Shipped as UN 1604 in accordance with its flammable/corrosive classification. We confirm and document packing group and exact classification for your specific shipment and destination.

Every batch, documented

We verify documentation before dispatch so there are no surprises at your incoming-goods bench.

Specification agreed

Assay confirmed against your process requirement before order placement.

Producer batch testing

The producing plant tests each batch against the agreed specification before release.

Documentation review

COA, SDS and transport paperwork checked by our desk before the shipment is booked.

Traceable dispatch

Each shipment is traceable to its producing batch, with full chain-of-custody records on request.

Production background

How ethylenediamine is made

Ethylenediamine is produced industrially by the reaction of 1,2-dichloroethane with ammonia, or by amination of ethanolamine, giving the diamine after purification and fractional distillation. Diethylenetriamine and higher ethyleneamines are typically co-products of the same process family.

We do not publish operating process parameters here; this is background only. Full technical and safety documentation accompanies every shipment, and any process-specific detail you need is best confirmed directly with our technical desk.

Frequently asked

Ethylenediamine, answered

What is ethylenediamine used for?
Ethylenediamine is the precursor to EDTA and other chelating agents, an epoxy resin curing agent, a building block for polyurethane fibres and PAMAM dendrimers, a precursor to fungicides such as mancozeb and maneb, a pharmaceutical intermediate (including the bronchodilator aminophylline), and a corrosion inhibitor and ligand in coordination chemistry.
How does ethylenediamine relate to DETA and TETA?
Ethylenediamine is the simplest member of the ethyleneamine family - a two-carbon diamine. Diethylenetriamine (DETA) and triethylenetetramine (TETA) extend the same -CH2CH2NH- repeat unit with additional amine groups, giving longer chains with more nitrogen sites and progressively higher viscosity and reactivity.
Is ethylenediamine hazardous?
Yes. It is flammable, harmful if swallowed or in contact with skin, causes severe skin burns and eye damage, may cause an allergic skin reaction, and is harmful to aquatic life. It ships as UN 1604. Full GHS documentation accompanies every consignment.
What grade do you supply?
Technical grade, typically 99%+ assay. Tell us your end use and we will quote against the correct specification.
What packing do you offer?
Drums, IBCs and bulk/ISO tank shipment, sized to chelating-agent, epoxy-curing and pharmaceutical-intermediate order volumes.
Do you manufacture this yourself?
No - Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. We place your order with whichever qualified producer fits your specification and timeline, and hold a second source in reserve.
