Product overview

What Triethylene Glycol is used for

Triethylene Glycol (TEG) is a colourless, practically odourless, viscous, hygroscopic liquid, fully miscible with water and many organic solvents. It is the third member of the ethylene-glycol family, formed in smaller proportion alongside MEG and DEG when ethylene oxide is hydrolysed.

TEG's defining use is as the industry-standard dehydrating and dew-point-control glycol in natural-gas processing — its combination of high boiling point, strong water affinity and good thermal stability lets gas plants regenerate it by simple heating, making it the preferred glycol for continuous gas-dehydration units. Beyond gas processing, TEG is used in polyester and plasticizer manufacture, as an alcohol/organic solvent, as a building block for PEG (polyethylene glycol) oligomers, and as a diol monomer in biomaterials chemistry.

Where it sits in the petrochemical value chain

  • Ethylene Oxide the shared feedstock hydrolysed to form MEG, DEG and TEG together. See that page.
  • Mono Ethylene Glycol the primary, highest-volume product of the same hydrolysis step. See that page.
  • Triethylene Glycol (this product) the smallest-volume co-product, valued specifically for gas dehydration and specialty applications.

Handling character

TEG is considered one of the less acutely hazardous glycols in this range, carrying a GHS Warning signal word for eye irritation. Full hazard detail is in the Safety section below.

How we supply Triethylene Glycol

Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. Purity and water content are critical to gas-dehydration performance — that shapes how we manage this line.

We place your order with whichever qualified producer best matches your required grade, your price point and your delivery window, and confirm your jurisdiction's import requirements before booking.

We keep a second qualified source on this line, so a single-plant disruption never becomes your production problem.

  • Purity and water content confirmed before we quote. Consistency matters to gas-dehydration and polyester quality alike.
  • Classification and documentation managed end to end. Labelling and carrier compliance confirmed before booking.
  • Scheduled call-off scheduling. We hold contracted tonnage and release it against your consumption calendar.
  • Batch traceability to the producing plant. Full chain of custody documentation on request.
  • Export machinery handled in-house. Classification, approved packing, labelling, freight booking and customs paperwork are ours to manage.
  • Gas-dehydration grade sourced to your specification. Matched precisely to your process requirement.

Safety, storage & handling

Causes serious eye irritation — one of the milder glycols

TEG is considered one of the less acutely hazardous glycols in this range. The summary below is orientation only — the safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch is the authoritative document.

GHS Signal word: Warning

Classified hazards

  • H319Causes serious eye irritation.

Eye protection recommended. Avoid direct eye contact during transfer and handling; always read the SDS issued with your specific batch and store accordingly.

Storage

Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from strong oxidising agents.

Handling

Use standard PPE (gloves, eye protection) for liquid transfer. Avoid direct eye contact and prolonged skin exposure; provide adequate ventilation when handling heated or atomised material.

Transport

TEG typically ships under GHS pictogram GHS07 without a dedicated UN dangerous-goods number for standard industrial shipments (HS code 2909.49.80.90); we confirm and document the exact classification for your specific shipment and destination.

Quality assurance

Every batch, documented

We verify documentation before dispatch so there are no surprises at your incoming-goods bench.

Specification agreed

Assay, colour and water content confirmed against your process requirement before order placement.

Producer batch testing

The producing plant tests each batch against the agreed specification before release.

Documentation review

COA, SDS and transport paperwork checked by our desk before the shipment is booked.

Traceable dispatch

Each shipment is traceable to its producing batch, with full chain-of-custody records on request.

Production background

How TEG is made

TEG forms as the smallest-volume co-product of ethylene oxide hydrolysis, the same reaction used industrially to produce Mono Ethylene Glycol and Diethylene Glycol. As ethylene oxide reacts further with the DEG already formed, a small proportion of TEG is generated alongside the primary MEG and secondary DEG streams.

We do not publish operating process parameters here; this is background only. Full technical documentation accompanies every shipment, and any process-specific detail you need is best confirmed directly with our technical desk.

Frequently asked

Triethylene Glycol, answered

What is Triethylene Glycol used for?
Triethylene Glycol (TEG) is the industry-standard dehydrating and dew-point-control glycol used in natural-gas processing. It is also used in polyester and plasticizer manufacture, as an alcohol/organic solvent, as a building block for PEG (polyethylene glycol) oligomers, and as a diol monomer in biomaterials chemistry.
Why is TEG preferred for natural-gas dehydration?
TEG combines a high boiling point with strong water affinity and good thermal stability, letting gas-processing plants regenerate (re-concentrate) it by simple heating without excessive degradation, which is why it is the glycol of choice for continuous gas dehydration units over MEG or DEG.
Is Triethylene Glycol hazardous?
TEG carries a GHS Warning signal word with an H319 classification (causes serious eye irritation). It is considered one of the less acutely hazardous glycols in this range, but standard PPE and handling precautions still apply. Full regulatory documentation accompanies every consignment.
What grade do you supply?
Industrial-grade and gas-dehydration-grade TEG to the purity your process requires. Tell us your end use and we will quote against the correct specification.
What packing do you offer?
Drums, IBC totes, and bulk ISO tank or flexi-tank shipment, sized to gas-plant and industrial-user order volumes.
Do you manufacture this yourself?
No - Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. We place your order with whichever qualified producer fits your specification and timeline, and hold a second source in reserve.
