Product overview

What Ortho Fluoro Aniline is used for

Ortho Fluoro Aniline is an aniline carrying a single fluorine ortho to the amino group. That neighbouring fluorine changes the amine's basicity and steers where the ring reacts next, which is why this isomer, rather than the meta or para pattern, is the one most often specified for azo colour chemistry and for the isocyanate route into agrochemical actives. The result is a general-purpose fluoroaniline that has earned a place in colour chemistry, crop protection and pharmaceutical synthesis alike.

In practice ortho fluoroaniline is a captive intermediate: plants buy it to diazotise for dye and pigment chemistry, to phosgenate into 2-fluorophenyl isocyanate, or to carry the fluorine directly into an amide, sulfonamide or heterocyclic pharmaceutical building block. Very little of it is ever sold on as-is.

Why the isomer matters

The three fluoroaniline isomers are separate molecules with separate uses, and a substitution downstream is not recoverable:

  • 2-Fluoroaniline / Ortho Fluoroaniline (CAS 348-54-9) — this product. Fluorine ortho to the amine. The highest-volume of the three monofluoroaniline isomers.
  • 3-Fluoroaniline (CAS 372-19-0) — the meta isomer, with its own dye and pharmaceutical routes where the 1,3 fluorine pattern is required.
  • 4-Fluoroaniline (CAS 371-40-4) — the para isomer, used mainly in fluorinated pharmaceutical actives; supplied on our para fluoroaniline page.

If your purchase order simply says "fluoroaniline", quote us the CAS number and we will confirm the correct material before the order is placed. We also supply the polyfluorinated grades this family feeds into — see 2,3,4-trifluoroaniline and ask us about the difluoroaniline grades from our wider fluoroaniline range.

Appearance and handling character

Ortho fluoroaniline ships as a clear colourless to pale yellow, orange or brown liquid with a melting point around -29 °C — it stays liquid across essentially any transport or storage climate you are likely to encounter, which is a welcome contrast to some of the solid chloroanilines in our range. It is slightly soluble in water and miscible with most common organic solvents. Like all primary aromatic amines it darkens on exposure to air and light, drifting from clear toward yellow and then brown. It is also a flammable liquid, so read the next section before planning bulk handling: fire risk sits alongside the acute-toxicity and irritation hazards typical of this substance class.

Applications

Where our customers put this molecule to work

Ortho fluoroaniline is a general-purpose intermediate rather than a single-outlet one. Its volume is spread across colour chemistry, crop protection and pharmaceutical synthesis.

Azo dyes & specialty pigments

Diazotised ortho fluoroaniline is coupled onto naphthol and acetoacetarylide components to build monoazo dyes and specialty pigments. The ortho fluorine steadies the diazonium salt and shifts shade against the unsubstituted aniline.

  • Diazo component in azo dye chemistry
  • Isomer content shows up directly as off-shade
  • See also 2,4-difluoroaniline

Agrochemical intermediates

Converted to 2-fluorophenyl isocyanate, ortho fluoroaniline is a documented route into insect growth regulators such as flufenoxuron and into carbamate-type herbicides such as carfentrazone-ethyl.

  • Isocyanate route into insect growth regulators
  • Herbicide intermediate chemistry

Pharmaceutical & CNS intermediates

A 2-fluorophenyl fragment is a recognised building block across pharmaceutical synthesis, including drugs targeting central nervous system disorders, installed through amide, sulfonamide or N-alkylation chemistry.

  • Amide, sulfonamide and urea formation
  • N-methylation to 2-fluoro-N-methylaniline and similar

Specialty polymers & resins

The fluorine substituent lends thermal and chemical stability to specialty polymer and resin chemistry, where ortho fluoroaniline contributes a functional aryl-amine unit to the backbone or as a curing-agent building block.

  • Functional monomer for specialty resins
  • Custom formulation support on request
  • Trial quantities available

Fine & custom synthesis

A cheap, well-characterised fluoroaniline building block for custom amides, ureas, Schiff bases and further halogenated derivatives such as 4-chloro-2-fluoroaniline, where the ring fluorine is retained as a handle for later chemistry.

  • Custom amide and urea formation
  • Feeds further halogenated fluoroaniline building blocks
  • Available in trial and laboratory quantities

Contract & scheduled supply

Dye, agrochemical and API intermediate plants run to campaign, not to a calendar month. Most buyers want tonnage released against a production plan rather than in one shipment. We hold inventory and release it to your schedule.

  • Annual contracts with scheduled call-off
  • Price held across the contract period
  • Second source held in reserve

How we supply Ortho Fluoro Aniline

Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. We own no fluorination plant — and for a specification-sensitive intermediate like this one, that independence works in your favour. We are never obliged to push you whatever a captive unit happens to be running that month.

Instead we place your order with whichever qualified producer best matches your assay, your isomer tolerance, your price point and your delivery window.

We keep a second qualified source on this line. When a plant goes down for maintenance, or a logistics disruption hits a route, your campaign switches source rather than stalling.

  • Specification read against the CAS first. We confirm you need 348-54-9 and not the meta or para isomer, or a polyfluorinated grade, before we quote a price.
  • Batch COA shared before dispatch. You approve the assay, moisture and isomer profile against your own spec while the material is still in our warehouse.
  • Hazard status stated up front. This material is flammable and carries acute-toxicity and irritation classifications, and we say so at enquiry stage — not in the small print of a document pack that arrives with the goods.
  • Pre-shipment samples for qualification. New account or new source, your R&D team runs a lab batch before the full quantity ever moves.
  • Packing chosen for fire-safe handling. As a flammable liquid, drum choice, venting and stowage all matter. We plan them with you rather than defaulting to whatever is on the shelf.
  • Export machinery handled in-house. Hazard classification, UN-approved packing, labelling, freight booking and customs paperwork are ours to manage.
  • Consolidation onto one bill of lading. Ship ortho fluoroaniline alongside other intermediates from our range — one invoice, one shipment, one counterparty.
Packing & logistics

Packed the way your plant receives it

Pack format drives your landed cost and your handling effort — and for a flammable liquid, it also drives fire risk in storage. Tell us how it will be charged at your end and we will quote the format that suits your operation.

25 – 200 kg net

Lined steel or HDPE drums

UN-certified drums with an inert liner and vented closures suited to a flammable liquid. The default format for LCL movements and mid-size batch charging.

100 g – 25 kg

Samples & trial packs

Laboratory samples and pilot quantities in glass or lined containers, dispatched by courier so your R&D team can qualify the grade before committing to campaign volume.

1000 L IBC

Intermediate bulk containers

Stackable IBCs with an inert liner for high-volume users with mechanical charging. Fewer handling movements and lower packing cost per kilo than drummed material.

Fire-safe stowage

Flammable-liquid segregation

Container stowage plans that keep this flammable liquid segregated from oxidisers and ignition sources, with correct venting and labelling for the transport class.

Safety, storage & handling

Handle it as a flammable, toxic aromatic amine

Ortho fluoroaniline combines flammable-liquid behaviour with the acute-toxicity and irritation profile typical of primary aromatic amines. Neither hazard is minor on its own, and together they should shape your storage, PPE and emergency planning from the outset. The summary below is orientation only — the safety data sheet supplied with your consignment is the authoritative document and should govern your risk assessment, PPE selection, exposure monitoring and emergency planning.

GHS Signal word: Danger

Classified hazards

  • H226Flammable liquid and vapour.
  • H331Toxic if inhaled.
  • H302Harmful if swallowed.
  • H312Harmful in contact with skin.
  • H315Causes skin irritation.
  • H319Causes serious eye irritation.
  • H373May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure.

Hazard statements reflect the classification commonly published for CAS 348-54-9. Supplier classifications vary in the detail of the acute-toxicity cut-offs; always read the SDS issued with your specific batch, and treat the flammability entry as the one that most often gets under-weighted for a substance also known for its toxicity profile.

Spill & emergency orientation

Plan your response before the drum leaks, not after. The points below are orientation for your emergency planners — sections 4, 5 and 6 of the SDS are the authoritative instructions and should be posted at the point of use.

  • Eliminate ignition sources first. This is a flammable liquid — no open flames, sparking equipment or smoking near a spill, and use explosion-proof electrical fittings in the storage and handling area.
  • Contain, do not hose. Bund the spill and collect the liquid mechanically into a labelled container; never wash it to a drain.
  • Assume skin absorption. Contaminated clothing is a continuing exposure route — remove it immediately and wash the skin thoroughly.
  • Have the SDS with the casualty. Fluoroanilines are associated with methaemoglobinaemia as a class effect, and the treating clinician needs the product identity and CAS number in hand.
  • Record the exposure. With an organ-damage classification on repeated exposure (H373), most occupational regimes expect an exposure record to be created and retained.

Storage

  • Store as a flammable liquid, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from ignition sources, direct sunlight and heat. Bond and ground containers during transfer to control static discharge.
  • Keep containers tightly closed. Air and light drive the colourless-to-brown drift typical of anilines, and an open drum also loses vapour and picks up moisture.
  • Segregate from oxidising agents, strong acids, acid chlorides and open flame or spark sources. As a primary aromatic amine it also reacts exothermically with acylating and oxidising reagents.
  • Access-controlled storage. The acute-toxicity and repeated-exposure organ classifications justify the same restricted-access discipline as any classified hazardous substance.
  • Shelf life is typically 18–24 months in sealed original packing under these conditions, ideally under an inert gas blanket and away from light. Re-assay before use after long storage.

Handling & PPE

  • Fire risk first. Use explosion-proof electrical, ventilating and lighting equipment wherever this liquid is transferred, sampled or charged to a reactor.
  • Skin protection is the priority. Chemical-resistant gloves and coveralls, not just splash protection — treat skin contact as an exposure route by default.
  • Respiratory protection where vapour may accumulate, particularly in enclosed transfer areas or warm climates — H331 (toxic if inhaled) applies.
  • Eye protection is non-negotiable. Goggles or a face shield for any operation with splash potential, particularly drum sampling and transfer.
  • Never discharge to drain or watercourse. Collect spills and residues as regulated chemical waste.

Transport

Ortho fluoroaniline moves as regulated cargo under the "fluoroanilines" transport entry, UN 2941, Class 6.1, typically Packing Group III. We classify each consignment, apply UN-approved packaging and labelling, and file the dangerous-goods declaration before the booking is made. The applicable class and packing group are confirmed on your shipping documents and SDS — ask us for the current DG paperwork when you plan the shipment.

Quality & documentation

What travels with every consignment

A chemical shipment is only as good as the file that travels with it. Verifying what the source plant sends is precisely the work you are buying from a supplier.

Certificate of Analysis

Batch-specific assay by GC, moisture by Karl Fischer, appearance and isomeric purity — checked against your purchase specification before we release the goods.

GHS Safety Data Sheet

Full 16-section SDS in GHS format covering hazards, exposure controls, handling, storage, spill response, toxicology and disposal — issued in the language your destination requires.

Dangerous Goods Declaration

UN number, hazard class, packing group and IMDG or IATA declaration prepared and filed before the container is booked, with correctly marked and labelled packaging.

Certificate of Origin

Chamber-attested where required, plus preferential-origin forms where a trade agreement gives your import duty relief at the destination.

Third-party inspection

SGS, Intertek or Bureau Veritas sampling and inspection arranged on request before loading, giving you independent verification of what actually ships.

Retained & pre-shipment samples

Pre-shipment samples carry the same COA as the commercial lot, so what your laboratory qualifies is exactly what arrives. Retention samples held against the batch.

The chemistry

The two routes out of this aniline

Almost everything made from ortho fluoroaniline leaves by one of two doors: the diazonium salt, or the isocyanate. Understanding which one you are using explains why the specification matters and which impurity will hurt you. The routes below are the general industrial pattern, not a process disclosure.

Start with the aniline

Ortho fluoroaniline provides a primary aromatic amine with fluorine locked at the ortho position, steering both diazotisation and downstream ring reactivity.

Door one — diazotise

Sodium nitrite in acid at low temperature gives the diazonium salt, which is coupled onto a naphthol or acetoacetarylide to build an azo dye or specialty pigment.

Door two — phosgenate

Conversion to 2-fluorophenyl isocyanate opens the carbamate and urea routes: insect growth regulators, herbicide intermediates and a wide range of substituted ureas.

Finish to grade

The crude product is purified and standardised to whatever the end market demands — colour target, agrochemical spec or pharmaceutical-grade impurity profile.

Why aniline quality carries through the whole route

Both doors act on the nitrogen. Anything in the feed that competes for that nitrogen, or that carries its own reactive functionality, follows the material down the line:

  • Isomeric fluoroanilines diazotise or phosgenate in parallel and give structurally similar products — an off-shade chromophore in colour work, a hard-to-separate carbamate in agrochemical work.
  • Residual water is tolerable in diazotisation but destroys phosgene or acid chloride on the isocyanate route, wasting reagent and generating HCl in the batch.
  • Oxidation products — the coloured species responsible for the brown drift — dull a finished shade and can show as colour in an otherwise near-colourless liquid.
  • Heavy residues concentrate in the still bottoms and reduce the number of passes you get from a distillation train.

That chain of consequences is the reason we quote against your written specification rather than a generic "99% technical" grade, and the reason the batch COA is shared for approval before dispatch rather than sent with the invoice.

Buying guidance

What actually moves the price of this intermediate

Ortho fluoroaniline is not a commodity with a screen price. Knowing what drives the quote helps you time a purchase and read whether an offer is realistic.

Multiple demand cycles

Dye, agrochemical and pharmaceutical demand pull on the same aniline at different times of year, so the market rarely goes quiet in the way a single-outlet intermediate does.

  • Quote early for campaign tonnage
  • Spot buying at peak costs materially more
  • Contracted call-off smooths the exposure

Upstream feedstock

The route back to a fluoroaniline runs through fluorobenzene and the nitration–reduction chain, alongside fluorinating-agent chemistry. Movements in these feedstocks feed through to the aniline within a quarter or so.

  • Fluorobenzene and fluorinating-agent cost set the floor
  • Energy cost weighs on distillation
  • We flag feedstock-driven moves in the quote

Regulatory pressure

The flammable-liquid and toxicity classifications raise the compliance cost of storing and moving this material. That cost sits inside the price, and it is one reason fluoroaniline capacity has consolidated rather than expanded.

  • Handling obligations vary by jurisdiction
  • Some markets restrict certain end uses
  • We check destination rules before quoting

Pack format

Cost per kilo falls from small drums to IBC-scale liquid packaging at volume — and with a flammable liquid, bulk packaging also cuts the number of times an operator opens a drum near an ignition risk.

  • Small drums carry the highest packing cost
  • IBCs are cheapest per kilo at volume
  • Less manual handling means less exposure and less fire risk

Freight & DG surcharges

This is regulated cargo, so ocean freight carries a hazardous surcharge and space is tighter than for general cargo. Destination and Incoterm move landed cost as much as the ex-works price does.

  • Compare on landed cost, not ex-works
  • DG space books out ahead of peak season
  • We quote FOB, CIF, CFR or DDP as you prefer

Source availability

A plant turnaround, an environmental inspection or a logistics disruption can take capacity offline at short notice. Single-sourced buyers feel this hardest.

  • We hold a second qualified source on this line
  • Qualify the alternate before you need it
  • Ask us about dual-source contracts

Technical support & compliance

Support that goes beyond shipping the drum

What our technical desk will do

  • Match a grade to your reaction. Tell us the step you are running and we will recommend the specification — and say so plainly when a tighter, costlier grade would add nothing.
  • Be straight about the hazard profile. We state the flammability and toxicity classifications at enquiry stage so your EHS team can price the controls into the decision, rather than meeting them for the first time on the label.
  • Advise on handling and storage for your site conditions — flammable-liquid storage rules differ meaningfully between jurisdictions and site types.
  • Review your specification before it goes into a contract, so you are not locked into a limit that no plant can consistently hit.

Regulatory & compliance notes

  • Flammable-liquid storage rules are jurisdiction-specific. Several regimes impose quantity thresholds, bunding and electrical-equipment requirements for flammable liquids of this class. Confirm what applies at your site before the first delivery.
  • Import controls vary by destination. Some jurisdictions apply registration, licensing or end-use declaration requirements to this material. We check the destination rules before quoting, not after you have raised the PO.
  • Chemical inventory listings differ between regions. Confirm your obligations under the applicable inventory regime for your import volume — we will supply the identity data you need for that filing.
  • Downstream restrictions can apply to certain agrochemical and pharmaceutical precursor categories. Your regulatory team should confirm the finished-product position for the end use you have in mind.

None of the above is legal advice — your own regulatory affairs team owns the final compliance position for your import and your workplace. What we commit to is giving you accurate product identity data, an honest statement of the hazard classification and complete documentation to work from.

Common questions

What buyers ask us about Ortho Fluoro Aniline

Is this material flammable?
Yes. Ortho fluoroaniline carries an H226 flammable liquid and vapour classification alongside acute-toxicity, skin- and eye-irritation entries, and a repeated-exposure organ-damage classification (H373). We would rather you read that here than discover it on the drum label. Store and handle it away from ignition sources, use explosion-proof equipment for transfer, and treat the SDS as the governing document for your risk assessment.
Can I use the meta or para isomer instead?
No. This page covers 2-fluoroaniline, CAS 348-54-9, with fluorine ortho to the amine. 3-fluoroaniline (CAS 372-19-0) and 4-fluoroaniline (CAS 371-40-4, our para fluoroaniline grade) place the fluorine elsewhere on the ring, which changes both the reactivity of the amine and the geometry of everything built from it. Always quote the CAS number on your purchase order.
What purity do you normally supply?
Commercial material typically assays 99.0% minimum by GC with moisture under 0.3%. That said, we quote against your specification rather than a generic grade. If your dye route needs a colour ceiling, or your isocyanate route needs controlled moisture, send us the spec sheet and we will source to it. The batch COA is always the governing document.
What is the minimum order quantity?
For commercial supply the practical minimum is one 25 kg drum. Below that we can supply laboratory samples and trial packs from 100 g upward so your R&D team can qualify the grade first. There is no obligation to take campaign volume before you have validated a sample.
How long does delivery take?
Stocked quantities typically dispatch within 3–7 working days of order confirmation. Custom-sourced or tighter-spec material usually runs 2–4 weeks depending on the source plant's schedule. Ocean transit is additional and varies by destination — your quote states the ex-works readiness date and the estimated transit separately, so there is no ambiguity in your planning.
Does it need any special transport precautions?
Yes — as a flammable liquid it moves under UN 2941, typically Class 6.1, Packing Group III, with the additional flammability characteristic noted on the transport document. We classify, pack and label every consignment to the applicable dangerous-goods regulations and file the declaration before booking; ask us for the current DG paperwork when you plan the shipment.
Why does the liquid darken in storage?
Primary aromatic amines oxidise slowly on contact with air and light, drifting from clear through pale yellow to brown. In most synthesis routes this is cosmetic and does not affect assay or yield. In dye and pigment work it matters, so tell us at enquiry stage and we will specify a colour ceiling on the COA and arrange packing that limits air ingress.
How should we store it, and what is the shelf life?
Store it as a flammable liquid — cool, dry, well-ventilated, away from ignition sources and direct sunlight, in tightly closed original packing, segregated from oxidisers and strong acids. Under those conditions expect a shelf life of 18–24 months. After extended storage, re-assay before charging it to a batch — material that has taken up moisture can hurt yield in the isocyanate step.
Is this a dangerous good? What paperwork comes with it?
Yes — it is classified as both flammable and hazardous, and moves as regulated cargo. Every consignment leaves us with:
  • Batch certificate of analysis
  • GHS-format safety data sheet
  • Dangerous-goods declaration with UN number, class and packing group
  • Commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading or airway bill
  • Certificate of origin and any destination-specific forms
Do you supply to my country?
We supply across nations, worldwide — there is no market we treat as out of range. This material does attract import controls and workplace obligations in some jurisdictions, so we check the destination requirements before quoting rather than after. If you are somewhere we have not shipped this grade before, we work out the routing and the compliance instead of declining the enquiry. Just give us the destination port.
Do you manufacture this yourself?
No — Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer, and on a product like this that is an advantage. Owning no plant means we are never selling you whatever a captive unit happens to be running. We place your order with whichever qualified producer fits your specification and timeline, and we hold a second source in reserve on this line. Read more about how we work.
Can you hold stock against a production plan?
Yes, and most of our customers on this line do exactly that. Dye, agrochemical and API intermediate plants run to campaign rather than continuous output, so we contract annual tonnage, hold it, and release it against your production calendar rather than landing the whole quantity in one shipment. Pricing is held across the contract period.
