What Hexamethylenediamine is used for
Hexamethylenediamine is a white to pale yellow flaked solid with an ammoniacal odour, consisting of a straight six-carbon chain with a primary amine group at each end. It is solid at room temperature and is usually handled molten or as flake, depending on the receiving plant's infrastructure.
Its single largest use, by far, is as the diamine half of nylon 6,6: HMDA polymerises with adipic acid in a condensation reaction to form the polyamide that gives nylon 6,6 fibre and engineering-plastic resin their characteristic strength and heat resistance. HMDA is also the starting material for hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), used to make premium, weather-resistant polyurethane coatings, and serves as an epoxy curing agent and a building block in specialty polymer and surfactant synthesis.
Where it sits in the diamine family
- 1,3-Propanediamine C3 diamine chain — shorter, used in surfactant and specialty-polymer synthesis. See that page.
- Hexamethylenediamine (this product) C6 diamine chain — the nylon 6,6 and HDI monomer.
- Ethylenediamine (EDA) C2 diamine — a different chemical family, used in chelating-agent and epoxy chemistry. See that page.
Appearance and handling character
Hexamethylenediamine is harmful if swallowed or in contact with skin, causes severe skin burns and eye damage, and may cause respiratory irritation — a corrosive-amine profile that demands careful PPE and ventilation. Full hazard details are in the Safety section below.

How we supply Hexamethylenediamine
Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. HMDA's role as a polymer monomer means purity and colour consistency are critical — that shapes how we manage this line.
We place your order with whichever qualified producer best matches your required grade, your price point and your delivery window.
We keep a second qualified source on this line, so a single-plant disruption never becomes your production problem.
- Polymer-grade assay confirmed before we quote. Consistency matters to nylon-salt and HDI feedstock quality.
- UN 2280 logistics managed end to end. Classification, labelling and carrier compliance confirmed before booking.
- Melting-point-aware handling advice. Flake, molten or heated-tank options discussed before booking.
- Scheduled call-off scheduling. We hold contracted tonnage and release it against your consumption calendar.
- Batch traceability to the producing plant. Full chain of custody documentation on request.
- Export machinery handled in-house. Classification, approved packing, labelling, freight booking and customs paperwork are ours to manage.

Corrosive and a respiratory irritant
Hexamethylenediamine's combination of corrosivity and respiratory irritancy makes PPE and ventilation the central handling concerns. The summary below is orientation only — the safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch is the authoritative document.
Classified hazards
H302Harmful if swallowed.H312Harmful in contact with skin.H314Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.H335May cause respiratory irritation.
Always read the SDS issued with your specific batch. Handle with chemical-resistant gloves, splash goggles and adequate ventilation; avoid breathing vapour or dust.
Storage
Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from strong oxidisers and acids. Below its melting point the product solidifies; plan storage and transfer accordingly.
Handling
Use with local exhaust ventilation. Minimise skin and eye contact with appropriate gloves and protective clothing. Avoid generating or breathing dust or vapour; contain any spill to prevent waterway contamination.
Transport
Shipped as UN 2280 in accordance with its corrosive classification. We confirm and document packing group and exact classification for your specific shipment and destination.
Every batch, documented
We verify documentation before dispatch so there are no surprises at your incoming-goods bench.
Specification agreed
Assay and colour confirmed against your polymer-grade requirement before order placement.
Producer batch testing
The producing plant tests each batch against the agreed specification before release.
Documentation review
COA, SDS and transport paperwork checked by our desk before the shipment is booked.
Traceable dispatch
Each shipment is traceable to its producing batch, with full chain-of-custody records on request.
How HMDA is made
Hexamethylenediamine is produced industrially from adiponitrile via catalytic hydrogenation, adiponitrile itself being derived from butadiene or adipic acid feedstocks through well-established large-scale petrochemical routes, followed by purification and flaking to the required polymer-grade assay.
We do not publish operating process parameters here; this is background only. Full technical and safety documentation accompanies every shipment, and any process-specific detail you need is best confirmed directly with our technical desk.
