What PCONA is used for
Para Chloro Ortho Nitro Aniline places a chlorine para to the amine and a nitro group ortho to it — the reverse geometry of OCPNA (2-chloro-4-nitroaniline). That difference matters: PCONA is registered under the Colour Index as C.I. Azoic Diazo Component No. 9 and is the diazo base behind Fast Red 3GL, a bright red azoic dye historically used across cotton dyeing, viscose printing and paper colouring.
Beyond dye chemistry, PCONA is also a recognised pharmaceutical intermediate, where the amine, chlorine and nitro group each provide handles for further synthesis.
Where it sits in the chloronitroaniline family
- 4-Chloro-2-nitroaniline / PCONA (CAS 89-63-4) — this product. Chlorine para, nitro ortho, relative to the amine. C.I. Azoic Diazo Component No. 9.
- 2-Chloro-4-nitroaniline / OCPNA (CAS 121-87-9) — the reverse pattern; see our separate product page.
- Other chloronitroaniline isomers — each pattern serves a distinct set of dye and pharmaceutical routes; the isomers are not interchangeable.
If your purchase order simply says "chloronitroaniline", quote us the CAS number and we will confirm the correct isomer before the order is placed. We supply the sister isomers as well — see our full chloronitroaniline range.
Appearance and handling character
PCONA ships as a bright orange crystalline powder or chunks melting around 117 °C. It is practically insoluble in water and stable but combustible, and incompatible with strong oxidising agents. Read the safety section below carefully before planning any handling: this material is very toxic by inhalation, skin contact and ingestion and carries a cumulative-effects warning, making it one of the more hazardous molecules in our chloronitroaniline range.
| Parameter | Typical value |

Important: the figures above are indicative of commercial grade material and are offered for planning only. The batch certificate of analysis is the governing document. If your process demands a tighter assay or a specific colour ceiling, send us the specification and we will quote against it rather than against a generic grade.

Where our customers put this molecule to work
PCONA's volume is concentrated in azoic dye chemistry, with a meaningful outlet in pharmaceutical intermediate synthesis.
Azoic dyeing — Fast Red 3GL
The classic outlet. PCONA is diazotised and coupled with a naphthol component to generate an insoluble bright red azo pigment directly on cotton, viscose or paper — historically traded under names including Fast Red 3GL Base and Red 3G Base.

How we supply PCONA
Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. We own no chlorination or nitration plant — and for a specification-sensitive intermediate like this one, that independence works in your favour. We are never obliged to push you whatever a captive unit happens to be running that month.
Instead we place your order with whichever qualified producer best matches your assay, your isomer tolerance, your price point and your delivery window.
We keep a second qualified source on this line, so a plant disruption does not stall your dyehouse production schedule.
- Specification read against the CAS first. We confirm you need 89-63-4 and not the 2-chloro-4-nitro isomer or another chloronitroaniline before we quote a price.
- Batch COA shared before dispatch. You approve the assay, melting range and colour against your own spec while the material is still in our warehouse.
- Hazard status stated up front. This material is very toxic by all three exposure routes and carries a cumulative-effects warning, and we say so at enquiry stage.
- Pre-shipment samples for qualification. New account or new source, your dyehouse or R&D team runs a coupling trial before the full quantity ever moves.
- Export machinery handled in-house. Hazard classification, UN-approved packing, labelling, freight booking and customs paperwork are ours to manage.
- Consolidation onto one bill of lading. Ship PCONA alongside other intermediates from our range — one invoice, one shipment, one counterparty.
Packed the way your plant receives it
Pack format drives your landed cost and your handling effort — and for a material toxic by all three exposure routes, it also drives operator exposure. Tell us how it will be charged at your end and we will quote the format that suits your operation.
Multi-wall paper & PE bags
Laminated multi-wall bags with an inner liner, palletised and shrink-wrapped. The default for LCL movements and batch-wise charging.
Fibre & HDPE drums
UN-certified drums with liner for longer sea transits, meeting the packing requirements for this hazard classification.
Jumbo / FIBC bags
Bulk bags with liner for high-volume users with mechanical charging. Fewer handling movements and lower operator exposure per kilo handled.
Samples & trial packs
Laboratory samples and pilot quantities dispatched by courier so your dyehouse or R&D team can run a coupling trial before committing to volume.
Incoterms to suit you
Quoted on the Incoterm your purchasing team works to. Ocean, air and road freight arranged end-to-end with documentation filed before booking.
Campaign despatch
Dye and pharmaceutical-intermediate production runs to campaign. We hold contracted tonnage and release it against your production calendar instead of landing it all at once.
Handle it as a very toxic, cumulative-hazard solid
PCONA is very toxic by inhalation, skin contact and ingestion, carries a warning for cumulative effects on repeated exposure, and is toxic to aquatic organisms with long-lasting effects. This is a more severe hazard profile than several other chloronitroaniline grades in our range. The summary below is orientation only — the safety data sheet supplied with your consignment is the authoritative document and should govern your risk assessment, PPE selection, exposure monitoring and emergency planning without exception.
Classified hazards
R26/27/28Very toxic by inhalation, in contact with skin and if swallowed.R33Danger of cumulative effects.R51/53Toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment.
Hazard statements reflect the classification data commonly published for CAS 89-63-4. Supplier classifications may differ in detail; always read the SDS issued with your specific batch, and treat the cumulative-effects warning as one that shapes your exposure-monitoring programme, not just your day-one PPE choice.
Spill & emergency orientation
Plan your response before the pallet arrives, not after a bag splits. The points below are orientation for your emergency planners — sections 4, 5 and 6 of the SDS are the authoritative instructions and should be posted at the point of use.
- No unprotected handling. Given the very-toxic classification across all three exposure routes, full protective clothing and respiratory protection are non-negotiable for any direct handling.
- Sweep, do not hose. Toxic to aquatic organisms with long-term effects. Collect spilled solid mechanically into a labelled container; never wash it to a drain.
- Suppress dust aggressively. Dry sweeping of a fine solid generates an inhalable aerosol — vacuum collection with HEPA filtration is strongly preferred over sweeping.
- Assume skin absorption. Contaminated clothing is a continuing exposure route — remove it immediately and wash the skin thoroughly.
- Have the SDS with the casualty. Chloronitroanilines can cause methaemoglobinaemia, and the treating clinician needs the product identity and CAS number in hand.
- Record the exposure. The cumulative-effects warning means most occupational regimes expect exposure records to be created and retained.
Storage
- Cool, dry, well-ventilated store, away from direct sunlight and heat sources, with access restricted to trained personnel only.
- Keep containers tightly closed and segregated from oxidising agents, strong acids and acid chlorides.
- Access-controlled, bunded storage. Given the toxicity and cumulative-effects classification, restricting who can reach the store is part of the control, not an administrative nicety.
- Shelf life is typically 12–24 months in sealed original packing under these conditions. Re-assay before use after long storage.
Handling & PPE
- Design exposure out, do not manage it down. Closed transfer and mechanical charging first, ventilation second, PPE last.
- Full protective clothing is the baseline, not just splash protection — chemical-resistant suit, gloves and respiratory protection appropriate to the exposure assessment.
- Health surveillance and exposure records. Where the cumulative-effects classification triggers obligations at your site, your occupational health provider and EHS function own the detail.
- Never discharge to drain or watercourse. Collect spills as solid waste and dispose of them as regulated chemical waste.
Transport
PCONA moves as regulated cargo under UN 2237. We classify each consignment, apply UN-approved packaging and labelling, and file the dangerous-goods declaration before the booking is made — ask us for the current DG paperwork when you plan the shipment.
What travels with every consignment
A chemical shipment is only as good as the file that travels with it. Verifying what the source plant sends is precisely the work you are buying from a supplier.
Certificate of Analysis
Batch-specific assay by GC, moisture, appearance and melting range — checked against your purchase specification before we release the goods.
GHS Safety Data Sheet
Full 16-section SDS in GHS format covering the very-toxic classification, exposure controls, handling, storage, spill response, toxicology and disposal — issued in the language your destination requires.
Dangerous Goods Declaration
UN 2237 declared correctly, with IMDG or IATA paperwork prepared and filed before the container is booked, with correctly marked and labelled packaging.
Certificate of Origin
Chamber-attested where required, plus preferential-origin forms where a trade agreement gives your import duty relief at the destination.
Third-party inspection
SGS, Intertek or Bureau Veritas sampling and inspection arranged on request before loading, giving you independent verification of what actually ships.
Retained & pre-shipment samples
Pre-shipment samples carry the same COA as the commercial lot, so what your laboratory qualifies is exactly what arrives. Retention samples held against the batch.
What actually moves the price of this intermediate
PCONA is not a commodity with a screen price. Knowing what drives the quote helps you time a purchase and read whether an offer is realistic.
Textile dyeing demand cycles
Fast Red 3GL and related azoic-red demand tracks cotton, viscose and paper-colouring production, which has its own regional seasonality.
- Quote early for campaign tonnage
- Contracted call-off smooths the exposure
Upstream feedstock
The route back to PCONA runs through chlorobenzene and nitration chemistry. Movements in benzene, chlorine and nitric acid feed through within a quarter or so.
- Chlorine and benzene set the floor
- We flag feedstock-driven moves in the quote
High-toxicity handling cost
The very-toxic classification raises the compliance cost of producing, storing and moving this material above a milder chloronitroaniline grade. That cost sits inside the price.
- Handling obligations vary by jurisdiction
- We check destination rules before quoting
Pack format
Cost per kilo falls from 25 kg bags to drums to jumbo bags, and reducing the number of times a pack is opened matters more for a very-toxic classified material.
- Small bags carry the highest packing cost
- Closed-system charging changes the calculus
Freight & DG surcharges
This is regulated cargo under UN 2237, so ocean freight carries a hazardous surcharge and space is tighter than for general cargo.
- Compare on landed cost, not ex-works
- We quote FOB, CIF, CFR or DDP as you prefer
Source availability
A specialised, higher-toxicity intermediate like this one is produced by fewer plants than a commodity aniline. Single-sourced buyers feel a disruption hardest.
- We hold a second qualified source on this line
- Ask us about dual-source contracts
