Diethylamine
A secondary amine with a well-earned place in the corrosion-inhibitor supply chain: diethylamine is the raw material behind N,N-diethylaminoethanol, a mainstay boiler-water and oilfield corrosion inhibitor, alongside a broad role in Mannich-reaction and silylamide chemistry.
Chelora Chemicals supplies diethylamine to specialty-chemical, oilfield-services and pharmaceutical-intermediate manufacturers worldwide, with full GHS documentation on every consignment.

What Diethylamine is used for
Diethylamine is a colourless liquid (commercial material is often pale brown) with a strong ammonia/fish-like odour, fully miscible with water and most common organic solvents. It is the symmetric secondary amine in the ethylamine family — two ethyl groups attached to one nitrogen.
Its best-known downstream use is as the precursor to N,N-diethylaminoethanol, a widely specified boiler-water and oilfield corrosion inhibitor. Beyond that, it is a standard reagent in Mannich reactions, a nitrogen source for alkylation to tertiary amines, and — on reaction with trimethylsilyl chloride — the route to a common silylamide reagent used across organic synthesis.
Where it sits among the ethylamines
- Ethylamine the primary form — one ethyl group on nitrogen. See that page.
- Diethylamine (this product) the secondary form — two ethyl groups, the balance point between reactivity and steric bulk.
- Triethylamine the tertiary form, used mainly as a non-nucleophilic base. See that page.
See our wider amine range for the other aliphatic amines we supply, including trimethylamine and n-butylamine.
Appearance and handling character
Diethylamine is fully water-miscible, volatile, and flammable across a wide vapour concentration range. It is also corrosive to skin and eyes, which sets it apart in handling terms from the lighter primary amines in this family.

How we supply Diethylamine
Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. On a corrosive flammable amine like this one, that means getting the packing, labelling and dangerous-goods paperwork right before the drum ever leaves the plant gate — not sorting it out in transit.
We place your order with whichever qualified producer best matches your required grade, your price point and your delivery window.
We keep a second qualified source on this line, so a single-plant disruption never becomes your production problem.
- Assay confirmed before we quote. Water content and colour matter to downstream corrosion-inhibitor and Mannich-reaction yield.
- Dangerous-goods documentation filed correctly. Class 3 with a Class 8 subsidiary risk needs both hazard sets declared accurately.
- Packing matched to the corrosive, flammable profile. UN-approved drums and IBCs rated for both hazard classes.
- Scheduled call-off scheduling. We hold contracted tonnage and release it against your production calendar.
- Batch traceability to the producing plant. Full chain of custody documentation on request.
- Export machinery handled in-house. Classification, approved packing, labelling, freight booking and customs paperwork are ours to manage.

Flammable, corrosive, and harmful by inhalation and contact
Diethylamine combines a flammability hazard with genuine skin and eye corrosivity. The summary below is orientation only — the safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch is the authoritative document.
Classified hazards
H225Highly flammable liquid and vapour.H302Harmful if swallowed.H312Harmful in contact with skin.H314Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.H332Harmful if inhaled.
Always read the SDS issued with your specific batch. Handle with chemical-resistant gloves, splash goggles and adequate ventilation.
Storage
Store in tightly closed, corrosion-resistant containers in a cool, well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks, open flame and oxidisers. Keep away from acids to avoid violent exothermic reaction.
Handling
Use with local exhaust ventilation. Ground and bond containers during transfer to control static discharge in a flammable-vapour environment. Avoid skin and eye contact; have emergency eyewash and safety-shower provision nearby.
Transport
Ships as UN 1154, typically Class 3 (flammable liquid) with a Class 8 (corrosive) subsidiary risk. We confirm and document packing group and exact classification for your specific shipment and destination.
Every batch, documented
We verify documentation before dispatch so there are no surprises at your incoming-goods bench.
Specification agreed
Assay, water content and colour confirmed against your process requirement before order placement.
Producer batch testing
The producing plant tests each batch against the agreed specification before release.
Documentation review
COA, SDS and dangerous-goods paperwork checked by our desk before the shipment is booked.
Traceable dispatch
Each shipment is traceable to its producing batch, with full chain-of-custody records on request.
How diethylamine is made
Diethylamine is produced industrially by the catalytic amination of ethanol with ammonia, a reaction that typically co-produces the full ethylamine family — ethylamine, diethylamine and triethylamine — in proportions that depend on catalyst, temperature and the ammonia-to-alcohol ratio used. The co-product stream is separated by fractional distillation into the three individual amines.
We do not publish operating process parameters here; this is background only. Full technical and safety documentation accompanies every shipment, and any process-specific detail you need is best confirmed directly with our technical desk.
