What MPG is used for
Mono Propylene Glycol (MPG) is a colourless, odourless, viscous and hygroscopic liquid, fully miscible with water. It is produced by the hydrolysis of propylene oxide, either under high-temperature/pressure non-catalytic conditions or with a catalyst at milder conditions, both yielding a mixture of mono-, di- and tripropylene glycol that is separated by distillation.
MPG's industrial-grade applications include use as a diol in unsaturated polyester resins, as a de-icing and antifreeze fluid for aircraft and runway use (valued over ethylene glycol for its lower toxicity), and as a heat-transfer fluid. Higher-purity USP/food/pharma/cosmetic grades are used as a humectant, solvent and preservative carrier in food, personal care, pharmaceutical formulations and e-liquids.
Where it sits in the petrochemical value chain
- Propylene Oxide the feedstock, hydrolysed into MPG. See that page.
- Mono Propylene Glycol (this product) the versatile diol for resin, de-icing and food/pharma applications.
- Unsaturated Polyester Resin a key downstream use, combined with maleic/phthalic anhydride and styrene.
Handling character
MPG has low acute toxicity and is not classified as hazardous under GHS for the industrial or food grades, though it is combustible and should be handled with standard industrial liquid controls.

How we supply Mono Propylene Glycol
Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. Grade separation between industrial and USP/food material is critical — that shapes how we manage this line.
We place your order with whichever qualified producer best matches your required grade, your price point and your delivery window, and confirm your jurisdiction's import and food/pharma compliance requirements before booking.
We keep a second qualified source on this line, so a single-plant disruption never becomes your production problem.
- Industrial vs. USP grade confirmed before we quote. Food, pharma and cosmetic uses require dedicated, compliant supply chains.
- Documentation managed end to end. Classification, labelling and carrier compliance confirmed before booking.
- Scheduled call-off scheduling. We hold contracted tonnage and release it against your consumption calendar.
- Batch traceability to the producing plant. Full chain of custody documentation on request.
- Export machinery handled in-house. Classification, approved packing, labelling, freight booking and customs paperwork are ours to manage.
- Industrial and USP grades both sourced. Matched precisely to your end-use specification.
Packed the way your plant receives it
Drum, tote or bulk tank — tell us your preferred format and we will quote and classify to it.
200-210 litre drums
Steel or plastic drums for smaller-volume orders and trial quantities.
~1,000 litre totes

Trial / sample quantities
Small packs dispatched for process trials before a commercial order is placed.
Contracted call-off supply
We hold contracted tonnage and release it against your consumption calendar.
Low toxicity — still handle with care
MPG has low acute toxicity and is not classified as hazardous under GHS, though it is combustible and prolonged undiluted contact can mildly irritate. The summary below is orientation only — the safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch is the authoritative document.
Classified hazards
Not classifiedNot classified as a GHS health or environmental hazard at typical exposure.Combustible noteCombustible liquid; keep away from open flame and high-temperature ignition sources.
Low-risk but not risk-free. Avoid prolonged, undiluted skin/eye contact and ensure food/pharma-grade material is kept segregated from industrial-grade stock; always read the SDS issued with your specific batch.
Storage
Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry area; segregate USP/food-grade stock from industrial-grade material to avoid cross-contamination.
Handling
Standard gloves and eye protection are sufficient for normal handling. Avoid prolonged skin contact with concentrated product and keep food-grade material dedicated to clean equipment.
Transport
Not classified as dangerous goods for bulk liquid transport. We confirm any destination-specific food/pharma import documentation your shipment requires.
Every batch, documented
We verify documentation before dispatch so there are no surprises at your incoming-goods bench.
Specification agreed
Assay, water content and grade (industrial/USP) confirmed against your process requirement before order placement.
Producer batch testing
The producing plant tests each batch against the agreed specification before release.
Documentation review
COA, SDS and transport/compliance paperwork checked by our desk before the shipment is booked.
Traceable dispatch
Each shipment is traceable to its producing batch, with full chain-of-custody records on request.
How MPG is made
MPG is produced industrially by the hydrolysis of propylene oxide with water, either at high temperature and pressure without a catalyst, or at milder conditions with an acid or base catalyst. The reaction yields a mixture of mono-, di- and tripropylene glycol, separated and purified by multi-stage vacuum distillation to the required grade.
We do not publish operating process parameters here; this is background only. Full technical documentation accompanies every shipment, and any process-specific detail you need is best confirmed directly with our technical desk.
