Product overview

What Octadecylamine is used for

Octadecylamine, commonly known by its fatty-chemistry name stearylamine, is a white, waxy flaked solid at room temperature with a mild fatty odour. It is the longest straight-chain amine in our dodecylamine-octadecylamine-oleylamine fatty-amine range, and its longer C18 tail gives it a higher melting point and stronger film-forming behaviour than dodecylamine.

Its best-known industrial role is as a volatile filming amine corrosion inhibitor in steam and boiler-water systems: it volatilises with steam and condenses as a thin protective film on metal surfaces throughout the steam-condensate cycle. It is also used as a raw material for cationic fabric softeners and textile auxiliaries, in asphalt and bitumen anti-stripping additives, and in surfactant and quaternary ammonium compound manufacture.

Where it sits in the fatty amine family

  • Dodecylamine (Laurylamine) C12 chain — shorter, more reactive, used in corrosion and flotation chemistry. See that page.
  • Octadecylamine (this product) C18 saturated chain — solid, strong film-former, boiler-water chemistry.
  • Oleylamine C18 unsaturated chain — liquid at room temperature, used in nanoparticle synthesis. See that page.

Appearance and handling character

Octadecylamine may cause an allergic skin reaction, causes serious eye and skin irritation, may cause organ damage through prolonged or repeated exposure, and is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Full hazard details are in the Safety section below.

How we supply Octadecylamine

Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. Octadecylamine's role protecting high-value boiler and steam assets means consistent amine value and freedom from off-odour matter — that shapes how we manage this line.

We place your order with whichever qualified producer best matches your required grade, your price point and your delivery window.

We keep a second qualified source on this line, so a single-plant disruption never becomes your production problem.

  • Amine value confirmed before we quote. Consistency matters to film-forming performance in boiler-water systems.
  • Flake-form logistics managed. We advise on bag type and handling given the product's solid, waxy form.
  • Aquatic-hazard documentation filed correctly. Every shipment carries the correct hazard declarations.
  • Scheduled call-off scheduling. We hold contracted tonnage and release it against your consumption calendar.
  • Batch traceability to the producing plant. Full chain of custody documentation on request.
  • Export machinery handled in-house. Classification, approved packing, labelling, freight booking and customs paperwork are ours to manage.

Safety, storage & handling

Sensitising, irritant, and very toxic to aquatic life

Octadecylamine's combination of skin-sensitisation potential and aquatic toxicity makes PPE and containment the central handling concerns. The summary below is orientation only — the safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch is the authoritative document.

GHS Signal word: Warning

Classified hazards

  • H304May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways.
  • H315Causes skin irritation.
  • H318Causes serious eye damage.
  • H373May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure.
  • H410Very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.

Always read the SDS issued with your specific batch. Handle with chemical-resistant gloves, splash goggles and adequate ventilation; avoid any release to waterways.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry area in closed bags or drums, away from strong oxidisers and acids. The waxy flake is stable at normal ambient storage temperatures.

Handling

Use with local exhaust ventilation when handling dust or molten material. Minimise skin and eye contact with appropriate gloves and protective clothing. Contain any spill to prevent waterway contamination — this product is very toxic to aquatic organisms.

Transport

Classified according to its skin/eye-irritant and aquatic-hazard profile for transport. We confirm and document packing group and exact classification for your specific shipment and destination.

Quality assurance

Every batch, documented

We verify documentation before dispatch so there are no surprises at your incoming-goods bench.

Specification agreed

Amine value and assay confirmed against your process requirement before order placement.

Producer batch testing

The producing plant tests each batch against the agreed specification before release.

Documentation review

COA, SDS and transport paperwork checked by our desk before the shipment is booked.

Traceable dispatch

Each shipment is traceable to its producing batch, with full chain-of-custody records on request.

Production background

How octadecylamine is made

Octadecylamine is produced industrially from stearic acid or stearyl alcohol derived from tallow or vegetable-oil feedstocks, via catalytic amination/reduction routes common to the fatty-amine industry, followed by purification and flaking to the required assay.

We do not publish operating process parameters here; this is background only. Full technical and safety documentation accompanies every shipment, and any process-specific detail you need is best confirmed directly with our technical desk.

Frequently asked

Octadecylamine, answered

What is octadecylamine used for?
Octadecylamine (stearylamine) is used mainly as a volatile filming corrosion inhibitor in steam and boiler-water systems, as a raw material for cationic fabric softeners and textile auxiliaries, in asphalt and bitumen anti-stripping additives, and in surfactant and quaternary ammonium compound manufacture.
Is octadecylamine the same as stearylamine?
Yes. Stearylamine is the common fatty-chemistry name for octadecylamine, reflecting its derivation from stearic acid and related C18 fatty feedstocks. Both names refer to the same straight-chain C18 primary amine, CAS 124-30-1.
Is octadecylamine hazardous?
Yes. It may cause an allergic skin reaction, causes serious eye irritation and skin irritation, may cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure, and is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. The safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch is the authoritative document.
What grade do you supply?
Technical grade flake, typically 90%+ assay. Tell us your end use and we will quote against the correct specification.
What packing do you offer?
Bags, drums and bulk shipment as solid flake, since octadecylamine is solid at ambient temperature.
Do you manufacture this yourself?
No - Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. We place your order with whichever qualified producer fits your specification and timeline, and hold a second source in reserve.
