What 1,3-Propanediamine is used for
1,3-Propanediamine is a colourless to pale yellow, flammable liquid with a strong ammoniacal odour, carrying two primary amine groups spaced three carbons apart. That three-carbon spacing — one carbon longer than ethylenediamine's two-carbon backbone — gives it reactivity and ring-forming behaviour distinct from the shorter and longer diamines in our range.
Industrially, it is used as a building block in surfactant and specialty-polymer synthesis, as an intermediate in corrosion-inhibitor manufacture, and in chelating-agent and crosslinking chemistry, including select polyamide and polyurea formulations where its reactivity and chain length are a good fit.
Where it sits in the diamine family
- Ethylenediamine (EDA) C2 diamine — shorter chain, chelating-agent and epoxy chemistry workhorse. See that page.
- 1,3-Propanediamine (this product) C3 diamine — a versatile intermediate step between EDA and HMDA.
- Hexamethylenediamine (HMDA) C6 diamine — the nylon 6,6 monomer, much longer chain. See that page.
Appearance and handling character
1,3-Propanediamine is fatal if inhaled, harmful if swallowed, causes severe skin burns and eye damage, may cause an allergic skin reaction, and reacts violently with water — a hazard profile combining flammability and corrosivity that requires careful handling. Full hazard details are in the Safety section below.

How we supply 1,3-Propanediamine
Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. This product's combined flammability and corrosivity means transport classification needs particular care — that shapes how we manage this line.
We place your order with whichever qualified producer best matches your required grade, your price point and your delivery window.
We keep a second qualified source on this line, so a single-plant disruption never becomes your production problem.
- Assay confirmed before we quote. Consistency matters to downstream polymer and surfactant performance.
- UN 2922 logistics managed end to end. Classification as a corrosive liquid with flammable subsidiary risk, confirmed before booking.
- Water-reactivity documentation filed correctly. Every shipment carries the correct hazard declarations.
- Scheduled call-off scheduling. We hold contracted tonnage and release it against your consumption calendar.
- Batch traceability to the producing plant. Full chain of custody documentation on request.
- Export machinery handled in-house. Classification, approved packing, labelling, freight booking and customs paperwork are ours to manage.

Flammable, corrosive, and reactive with water
1,3-Propanediamine's combination of flammability, corrosivity and water-reactivity makes ignition sources and containment the central handling concerns. The summary below is orientation only — the safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch is the authoritative document.
Classified hazards
H226Flammable liquid and vapour.H290May be corrosive to metals.H302Harmful if swallowed.H310Fatal in contact with skin.H314Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.H317May cause an allergic skin reaction.H334May cause allergy or asthma symptoms or breathing difficulties if inhaled.
Always read the SDS issued with your specific batch. Handle with chemical-resistant gloves, splash goggles, adequate ventilation and away from ignition sources.
Storage
Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from heat, sparks, open flame and strong oxidisers. Keep away from water sources given its exothermic water reactivity.
Handling
Use with local exhaust ventilation and appropriate electrical bonding/grounding for a flammable liquid. Minimise skin and eye contact with appropriate gloves and protective clothing. Contain any spill and keep away from water and ignition sources.
Transport
Shipped as UN 2922, Class 8 (corrosive) with a flammable-liquid subsidiary hazard, Packing Group II. We confirm and document exact classification for your specific shipment and destination.
