What Dodecylamine is used for
Dodecylamine, commonly known by its fatty-chemistry name laurylamine, is a waxy, off-white solid or liquid near room temperature, with a melting point close to body temperature — a common trait of mid-chain fatty amines. It carries a single reactive primary amine group at the end of a 12-carbon hydrophobic chain.
That amphiphilic structure — polar head, non-polar tail — makes dodecylamine useful as a corrosion inhibitor for steel surfaces in oilfield and water-treatment systems, where the amine group adsorbs onto metal and the fatty tail forms a protective film. It is also used as an intermediate for ore-flotation collectors in mining, in the manufacture of quaternary ammonium surfactants, and in asphalt and bitumen anti-stripping additives.
Where it sits in the fatty amine family
- Dodecylamine (this product) C12 chain — the shortest of our fatty-amine range, balancing reactivity and hydrophobicity.
- Octadecylamine (Stearylamine) C18 chain — longer, more hydrophobic, used in different formulation niches. See that page.
- Oleylamine C18 unsaturated chain — a liquid at room temperature, used in nanoparticle synthesis and surfactants. See that page.
Appearance and handling character
Dodecylamine is harmful if swallowed, causes severe skin burns and eye damage, and is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects — a hazard profile consistent with corrosive, surface-active fatty amines. Full hazard details are in the Safety section below.
| Parameter | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Appearance | Off-white waxy solid / liquid |
| Assay | 95.0% min |
| Amine value | Within producer specification |
| Colour (Hazen) | 50 max |

How we supply Dodecylamine
Chelora Chemicals is a supplier and sourcing partner, not a manufacturer. Dodecylamine's near-room-temperature melting point means handling and dispatch logistics need care — that shapes how we manage this line.
We place your order with whichever qualified producer best matches your required grade, your price point and your delivery window.
We keep a second qualified source on this line, so a single-plant disruption never becomes your production problem.
- Amine value confirmed before we quote. Consistency matters to downstream inhibitor and surfactant performance.
- Melting-point-aware logistics. We advise on pack type and transport conditions given the near-ambient melting point.
- Aquatic-hazard documentation filed correctly. Every shipment carries the correct hazard declarations.
- Scheduled call-off scheduling. We hold contracted tonnage and release it against your consumption calendar.
- Batch traceability to the producing plant. Full chain of custody documentation on request.
- Export machinery handled in-house. Classification, approved packing, labelling, freight booking and customs paperwork are ours to manage.

Corrosive and very toxic to aquatic life
Dodecylamine's combination of corrosivity and strong aquatic toxicity makes PPE and containment the central handling concerns. The summary below is orientation only — the safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch is the authoritative document.
Classified hazards
H302Harmful if swallowed.H314Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.H410Very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
Always read the SDS issued with your specific batch. Handle with chemical-resistant gloves, splash goggles and adequate ventilation; avoid any release to waterways.
Storage
Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry area. Below its melting point the product solidifies; plan storage and transfer accordingly, away from strong oxidisers and acids.
Handling
Use with local exhaust ventilation. Minimise skin and eye contact with appropriate gloves and protective clothing. Contain any spill or molten release to prevent waterway contamination — this product is very toxic to aquatic organisms.
Transport
Classified as a corrosive fatty amine for transport. We confirm and document packing group and exact classification for your specific shipment and destination.
Every batch, documented
We verify documentation before dispatch so there are no surprises at your incoming-goods bench.
Specification agreed
Amine value and assay confirmed against your process requirement before order placement.
Producer batch testing
The producing plant tests each batch against the agreed specification before release.
Documentation review
COA, SDS and transport paperwork checked by our desk before the shipment is booked.
Traceable dispatch
Each shipment is traceable to its producing batch, with full chain-of-custody records on request.
How dodecylamine is made
Dodecylamine is produced industrially from lauric acid or lauryl alcohol derived from coconut and palm-kernel oil, via catalytic amination/reduction routes common to the fatty-amine industry, followed by purification to the required assay.
We do not publish operating process parameters here; this is background only. Full technical and safety documentation accompanies every shipment, and any process-specific detail you need is best confirmed directly with our technical desk.
